Walking the Giants
25th June 2010
This year Nightingale is supporting a very worthwhile charity and will be actively involved in supporting a team in the Three Peaks Challenge. Nigel Quinn (Managing Director) and Stuart Reid (Business Development Manager) are taking part in the challenge on 9/10 September 2010 when the walkers will climb Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowden in 24 hours – some 11,178 feet in total and travelling 475 miles in the process! Nigel and Stuart will be the drivers for the challenge so will therefore not be too much of drain on the teams efforts.
The charity being supported is Walking With Giants, and in particular Finn Davidge-Hesketh. We need to raise £20,000 to help send Finn, her family and another seven families to the USA for The Little People of America Convention next summer. It means families can share experiences with others of different ages affected by primordial dwarfism and also speak to medical experts about it.
Jon, Finn’s father, said: “It’s an awesome experience and quite an emotional one to meet other parents and be able to talk about it”.
“It’s also great to see Finn playing with kids who are the same proportion as her.
“You can also relate all your worries and concerns to each other.”
Finn Davidge-Hesketh stands 28 inches tall at five years of age due to microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type 2 (MOPD II), a condition which affects just four people in the UK. The main concern for Melanie, Finn’s mother, and Jon is that Finn has a 50 per cent risk of developing brain aneurysms and Moyomoya disease, two potentially fatal vascular conditions that could develop at any time.
“Finn is not a burden to us. She’s just smaller and needs more medical attention.
“She is just a little girl and is smaller than others.
“She’s independent, quite feisty, bubbly and she is great fun.”
Melanie said: “She does not let her size frustrate her.
“She is a typical five-year-old and she doesn’t let anything bother her.”
There are 8 people in the UK and less than a 100 people in the world who live with primordial dwarfism. The benefits of being able to attend the Little People of America Conference range from family support groups to medical examination and research, but most importantly are the life long friendships that are forged for a unique group of individuals and their families, with your help we hope to make this very special dream become reality.
